Exciting and promising research is being done on the use turmeric in the treatment of acute spinal cord injury. Curcumin is the active substance found in the spice turmeric, which is known for its anti-inflammatory and medicinal properties.
This review article looked at 20 original articles that performed basic science studies on curcumin’s potential effect on nerve healing. The article shows evidence pointing to curcumin’s effect on antioxidant effects, reducing inflammation, improving pain and functional recovery. Much future research is needed before this may improve the lives and function of patients with SCI, but I find the science to be intriguing.
